I don’t know if I could ever pick one job that would be my “dream job.” I don’t know if there is a job that I would ever want to do forever. One thing I do know, is that if I had a dream job, these are some of the things it would have:
Schedule Flexibility: As I am at work at nine-o’clock in the morning I get a notice on my computer that my two-week dream trip to the United Kingdom is on sale for the month of October. No worries, because I have the flexibility to pack up my things and head to London. Or…Jim calls and asks if I would meet him for lunch. Yes, just name your time and place. Schedule flexibility is priceless.
Being mobile: Can I work from anywhere? Right now my job requires that I do my work in the classroom at our school. But I could definitely see myself having a job where I could work from Lucca, Italy, Kiev, Ukraine, Chicago, Illinois, or Washington D.C. My imagination runs away with me on this one as I picture meetings at Starbucks, mornings at home, mountain retreats, and much more in the middle of the week where I am still getting work done.
Finished product and reward: It’s May, the days are getting warmer, and people are moving out and about. But I especially love this time of year because it is the end of nine-months of specific work. One thing I love about being a teacher is that there is a start and a finish to the school year. I see the change from June to May, but most importantly, I see the finished product. Reward in a job is valuable, whether it is a finished product at the end of the year, that moment when something “clicks” in a student’s mind, or the look on a bride’s face when she sees how her wedding came together.
Creativity: When I think about creativity I think about ideas, innovation, and design. Coming up with new ideas and then putting them together is the ultimate creativity for me. I love coming up with ideas, making old ideas new and different, looking at something from a different angle, and designing the way something should go. I love to cook, write, take photos, play music, and much more. My dream job would give me ample opportunities to be creative!
Learning: One of my favorite channels is the History channel. Almost every time I turn it on, I am immediately captivated by the information that is being given to me for free. In fact, I will often pull out my computer and take notes. I am a reader. I love to read books, magazines, blogs, news articles, cereal boxes, and more. I love to learn and have every desire to be a life-long learner. As a teacher I get to learn new things all the time and I could not imagine a job where I was not constantly learning something new.
Daily change: Monday I am reading an article aloud to my class about Space. Tuesday I am teaching them how to write an organized paragraph. Wednesday we are using Geo-boards to help us understand the area of a shape. Thursday we are taking a computer tour of Paris on Google Earth, and Friday we are reading the book Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. I love a job that is constantly changing and on the move.
What must your dream job have???
