Burgers Worth Mentioning: Old School Burger

by Amber Hayes on September 8, 2009

1215517851_mOur story of Old School Burger doesn’t begin at Old School at all. In fact, it begins at a burger joint known as In-N-Out where Jim and I bought t-shirts to wear back to Colorado and show our deep passion for this West Coast burger heaven. One thing we noticed right away upon arriving back in Colorado in our full In-N-Out garb was the amount of people who recognized our shirts and commented about “the best burger” and how “Colorado needs an In-N-Out.”

One particular afternoon as we were out and about, a lady commented about her love for In-N-Out and asked if we had ever been to a place in the Denver area called Old School Burger. Fact: People who love In-N-Out know their burgers. She told us that this establishment in Denver was much like In-N-Out with a simple menu, an “animal style” of their own called “take it up a notch,” freshly cut French fries, and toasted buns. What? There is something that might even compare to In-N-Out here in our very own front-range city? Jim and I made it our mission to find this place, quickly! And find it we did.in_n_out_logo

Feeling pretty excited as we entered Old School Burger, I quickly scanned the menu and noticed it was very simple, much like In-N-Out. I ordered the hamburger meal, which in In-N-Out lingo is a single meal. The hamburger meal at Old School comes with fries and a drink and quite frankly, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I also asked them to “take it up a notch” so that they would add grilled onions and plenty of special sauce. I grabbed my soft drink cup, maneuvered my way over to the soda fountain, and did a bit of a happy dance when I noticed they had Diet Dr. Pepper. Feeling the anticipation, I waited with my pop and multiple cups of Ketchup.

One thing you need to know about Old School Burger is that it closely follows the In-N-Out belief that food should be fresh and of good quality. I am always a little skeptical of this when I hear it, because after all, it is ground beef coming from a burger stand. But, biting into my burger was a great experience. It did remind me a lot of In-N-Out with the sauce, grilled onions, and lightly toasted bun. We had fries-a-plenty and they actually tasted a lot like potatoes, which I am thinking is a good sign.

All in all, Old School Burger gets voted into my top fast, but not so fast-food, burger places.  (Clarification…I am still a true In-N-Out fan, but Old School might be as close as you get to the real deal.)

If you are in Colorado, Old School Burger is a must!

If you are on the West Coast, missing In-N-Out would be tragic!
