This is Seattle: Piroshky Piroshky

Market PhotoIf you are ever in Seattle, you must make a stop at a little Russian bakery located on Pike Place right across from the market.  Piroshky Piroshky has been part of the market since the 1990’s and as it is apparent by their name, they make and sell a traditional Russian pastry called a piroshky.

The first time I ever tried a piroshky was at a little street stand in Kiev, Ukraine.  I didn’t know what a piroshky was, but on the outside it looked a lot like a large dinner roll, baked to golden perfection. As I took my first bite, I soon discovered it was filled with potato, cheese, and cabbage.  Although it was unlike anything I had tasted before, I loved it.

Right away when I saw Piroskhy Piroshky in Seattle I knew I had to try it.  I was very impressed with the line that extended out the door because I have learned through different traveling experiences to go where the people are.  I ordered a potato, cheese, and onion piroshky for breakfast.  Let’s just say that it was so good that Jim and I went back that day for lunch and tried a couple different types, both exceptional!

Piroshky Piroshky has a great website.  Definitely check it out to read their story and see the menu.

DSC_7492Travel Info and Tips:

  • Piroshky Piroshky is a little shop without very much seating.  After grabbing your piroshky head north just to the end of the Pike Place Market.  There is a small park area overlooking Elliot Bay where you can find a park bench and enjoy your Russian treat.
  • If you need a little something to go with your piroshky pick up some fresh Bing or Rainier cherries from the market.
